Throwback Thursday : Strange & Sad

Below is a copy of a tin-type that came from the family album of my great great grandfather, Henry Koreman (1841-1923). The unknown child in the tin-type is obviously deceased. I am curious as to whether it was a common practice in the past to photograph the deceased, especially children. Future genealogical research may determine who the unknown child was.
