Oakwood's Historic Chapel Open for Tours
Maybe you've lived here all your life or maybe you're new to the area, but either way you've provably wondered what it looks like inside that "Castle on the Hill" in troy. Here's your chance to find out!
The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery will be offering guided tours of the Gardner Earl Chapel every Tuesday in August at 1 pm and at 2 pm for just $8 per person. Children under 12 are free. Registration is not necessary, but please arrive 10 minutes before starting time. For groups of 8 or more, please call Heidi at 518-221-7941 in advance. Look for the OPEN flag. Tuesday Tours happen only in the month of August.
A National Historic Landmark like no other, The chapel boasts Tiffany windows, marble mosaics and unique hidden treasure. You'll understand why it's a popular venue for intimate weddings and special events and you'll learn about the young man who inspired this spectacular building.

Memorial Day Ceremony & Meneely Bell Ringing
Oakwood Cemetery in Troy recently sent me a notification on its Memorial Day Ceremony next month. Cut and pasted is their information.
Historic Bell to be rung at Memorial Day Ceremony May 26th
The public is cordially invited to join us at 9AM on Saturday May 26th at Oakwood Cemetery for our annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The historic 3 ton Meneely bell in front of the Earl Chapel will be rung nine times to mark the start of the event. The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery and the Veterans of Lansingburgh will lay wreaths in honor of all deceased veterans. Michael Barrett will MC and Jim Pratt of the Veterans’ Miracle Center will speak. Nikki Osterhout will sing the national anthem. Representatives of the NYS 125th reenactors will fire a musket salute. Local Boy Scouts will place American flags on graves at the Soldiers’ Plot. There is no charge for this event. In case of heavy rain, the ceremony will be moved into the chapel. We hope you’ll join us.

Living History Tour: Oakwood By Lantern Light
Saturday, October 14 - 6PM- $15pp
The dead come to life in Oakwood Cemetery as our guides lead you to selected gravesites on this special nighttime walking tour. In the glow of lantern light, costumed interpreters will share the stories of their amazing lives and in some cases their harrowing deaths. You will meet a Civil war soldier, a drowning victim, a suffragette, the wife of a national figure and many more. This is not a "haunted" tour, but it is sure to be a mesmerizing adventure.
Registration is a must. Call 1.800.556.6273 with your name, phone, and how many people. Pay on arrival at the chapel flagpole where you will be assigned to a group and guide. Bring a flashlight, war sensible footwear and dress for the weather. Arrive early so you don't miss anything.
This event is presented by the Friends of Oakwood, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the not-for-profit, non-sectarian 19th Century cemetery and its historic Earl Chapel.

Vandalism at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY
This is not a story that I like to report but it is one that needs attention. Recently cemetery workers at the historic Oakwood Cemetery in Troy noticed that numerous headstones were knocked over. 108 stones in fact were vandalized. The Times Union reports that this act may be some sort of revenge act because this section of the cemetery had approximately 1000 stones uprighted and reset last year. I am attaching links to various news sites for the report.
