Halloween Throwback Photos

Below are a series of throwback photos from the 1970s of the White's at Halloween. We used to set up shop and scare the trick-o-treaters on Norwood Avenue.

Throwback Thursday : Charles Koreman?

The above Carte de Visite (CdV) came from the album of Henry Koreman (1841-1923). Henry was one of my great great grandfathers. Henry had a younger brother Charles (1844-1908) who enlisted in the Civil War but was discharged for being a minor, as can be seen below from the New York State Volunteers 177th Infantry rooster.

Family lore has it that his father, Cornelis Koreman, bought him out of military service only to have him re-enlist later into the NYSV 12th Calvary. The above CdV is of a young man in a Zouave uniform. Brief research finds that Company A of the 177th Infantry was also known as the Albany Zouave Cadets. Although Charles' rooster data indicates that he enlisted in Company E, could his company information be incorrect? And could this be Charles Koreman in a Zouave uniform?

The above tin-type is that of Charles Koreman in his 12th Calvary uniform. If this photo was taken near the time of his discharge, he was 21 years old. If the above CdV was taken at the time of his enlistment, Charles was 18 and not 19 as indicated in the rooster. I see a resemblance. Does anyone else?

Throwback Thursday : Strange & Sad

Below is a copy of a tin-type that came from the family album of my great great grandfather, Henry Koreman (1841-1923). The unknown child in the tin-type is obviously deceased. I am curious as to whether it was a common practice in the past to photograph the deceased, especially children. Future genealogical research may determine who the unknown child was.

Follow Up to Throwback Thursday

The above photo published last week is of a bus wreck that occurred in the 1950s or 1960s. It is located on Route 443 near the Town of Berne just past the intersection of Routes 443 and 85. A cousin of mine mentioned that he heard that a couple of people died in the crash and that the wreck would not be removed and that it remains as a memorial. After conducting a brief search I could not verify this information. It might be local lore?

Throwback Thursday Pic

Do any local readers recognize this wreck or know where it is? This wreck has been here for at least 40+ years. Last week on my way to a cousin's home I drove past this. As I was approaching the area, I wondered if it was still here. And it is. I mentioned it to my cousin and he told me a short story about it. Leave a post if you recognize it or know what it was. I will post the location in a few days.

Throwback Thursday : Lincoln Park Pool

An old throwback photo of my grand aunt, Eleanor Elizabeth Bailey, and my grandmother, Agnes Johanna Bailey, circa 1922. It is believed that this is the Lincoln Park pool in Albany. They lived on Morton Avenue and always were at the park pool.

Throwback Thursday : 1598 Digital Scan

For Throwback Thursday this week, I cropped a digital scan from the marriage records of the Catholic church in Hilvarenbeek, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. The scan is the marriage record of my 10th great grandparents, Walterus Adrianus van Spreuwel and Adriana Adrianus Joannes Tijlmans. They were married on 24 November 1598. Witnesses at the marriage were Petrus Jacobi and Adrianus Nicola van Spreuwel. As of today, this is oldest primary record that I have found in tracing my ancestry; so this is my oldest throwback photo/scan. Without a doubt it is extremely difficult to read!

Throwback Thursday : Stephen Joseph Koreman @ OLHOC Cemetery

Considering that I just got home and showered after five hours of working at the Krumkill Road cemetery, I deemed this old photograph of one of my great grandfather's older brothers, Stephen Joseph Koreman (1881-1968), appropriate. Stephen, with watering can in hand, is most likely tending to the graves of his ancestors at Our Lady Help of Christians cemetery in Glenmont. Someday I will try to determine the spot where this photo was taken.

Throwback Thursday : Old genealogy office

While looking through my photo albums for Throwback photos I came across this one from 1993. Age 25 and working on the family tree with our 19 year old cat. Viewing the monitor screen I was using one of my first genealogy programs, Roots III, long discontinued. The photo was taken in our first house in Albany. Noticing my vintage Packard Bell computer with its 3 1/2" and 5 1/2" floppy drives. The huge 13" monitor was impressive. The $5 1960s Steelcase Multiple 15 desk that I bought years ago was one of the best purchases that I made. The desk was in mint condition for its age and was used by us for years. Wish I still had it.

Throwback Thursday : Albany Rural Cemetery, August 1989

Ah the sickness continues with this Throwback Thursday photo that was taken in August of 1989 at Albany Rural Cemetery. We were at one of favorite haunts and I decided to be goofy. Notice my svelte clothing. Photo was taken about two months after I was wiped out in a car accident. Very very lucky, I could have been residing in the marble orchard myself.

Throwback Thursday : New Year's Eve 1973

Here is a throwback photo from a New Year's Eve party that my parents had in 1973. The photo left to right is of my brother Michael, my paternal grandfather, George Edward Kirk White, one of my great grandfathers, Joseph William Koreman, myself, and my maternal grandfather Joseph Albert Koreman. I was fortunate to have known all four grandparents, lived with one set of grandparents and knew one great grandfather and one great grandmother.
